Chapter Seven
They crawled back to the Moskvitch while bullets and shrapnel whined inches above their heads. Bernard held the rear door open while Smith put his head inside to find the girl and get her out. At first, he didnât see her. She was curled up in a ball on the floor, her eyes wide with terror.
He tried to calm her. âItâs okay, nothing to worry about, weâll get you out of this.â
She stared at him without seeing him, as if sheâd entered a kind of fugue state, unable to think, see, speak, or react. He gently pulled her from the vehicle and started to drag her away, holding her down on the jungle floor. They moved away just in time. Soldiers had spotted the vehicle after the gunfire had swept away part of the foliage covering it. They peppered it with a long line of bullets, and a mortar shell exploded nearby.
They crawled further away when suddenly a dark shape loomed out of the foliage. He cursed. He couldnât reach his pistol in time, and then he relaxed. It was Stewart.
âColonel, what gives?â
The expression on his face had changed. Grim resignation, not what heâd expect from an officer leading men in battle.
âWhat gives? Itâs a disaster, thatâs what gives. Like I said, this had to end sooner or later, but I didnât think it would end here and now. You were right, Smith. Thereâre too many of them. Iâve lost a lot of men, dead or wounded, and those thatâre left donât stand much of a chance. Unless they can get away, and I donât hold out much hope of that. Whatâs with the girl?â
âWe need to get her away.â
He gave a sympathetic nod. âPoor kid, sheâll be lucky to make it out. If the Viets capture her, sheâll be more than unlucky.â
âWeâll get her out,â Smith grunted, âIâve been in worse situations.â
He nodded. âHow do you plan on getting her away?â
âHow? Iâll tell you how. Weâll fight like fuck, thatâs how. Time to get out of Dodge.â
Before they moved off, he scooped soft mud from the ground and smeared it over their clothes, faces, and hands, elementary but effective camouflage. Then they crawled away from the firing. Snaking through the undergrowth, and sometimes hiding flat on the ground, they heard soldiers getting nearer. Several times the girl moaned in terror, but Bernard managed to soothe her, stroking her hair and murmuring to her in her native Vietnamese.
At first, she quietened, and they made a few meters more until a mortar shell hit the ground very close to them. The metal fragments whistled overhead, slicing through the trees. They mightâve made it, except for the soldier who appeared, stepping out from behind the trees in front of them. Somehow, heâd managed to get ahead of the main force, but so far, he hadnât spotted them. Provided they remained flat on the ground and didnât move, there was a good chance he wouldnât spot them and would move on.
He didnât
